NEWS: Megan Hamilton Releases See Your Midnight Breath in the Shipyard April 7th Across Canada
March 11, 2009
Toronto sweetheart Megan Hamilton will release her second full length album, See Your Midnight Breath in the Shipyard April 7th, 2009 across Canada. The album will be released on the artist run Familiar Music, which Hamilton founded with Steve Puchalski, Gary Peter and Shelby Lamb in 2006. Following 2007’s sultry and beautiful, how we think about light EP, SYMBiTS is a special release from the indie folk pop songstress that stretches the typical methods in which music can be recorded. Hamilton will release the album in her hometown Toronto at the Rivoli on April 9th with friends Olenka and the Autumn Lovers from London, ON, and Toronto comedienne Kathleen Phillips opening up the night. She will spend the rest of the Spring and Summer touring with her band, The Volunteer Canola, in Quebec, Ontario and beyond.
Recorded late in the summer of 2008, SYMBiTS was laid down in the OIART studios in London, Ontario. Long-time creative partner to Megan, Mark Vogelsang, co-producer and engineer, researched the sonic qualities of several different rooms in ships to create a thematic, aural journey: “I spent a lot of time alone listening to ocean samples, metallic sounds, various audio takes recorded in cold climates, as well as studying sound characteristics of breathing in cold air, which ended up being the concept for developing the reverb for Megan’s vocals and certain background sounds.”
SYMBiTS marks the third collaboration between Megan and Mark and was recorded differently than the critically acclaimed Feudal Ladies Club and how we think about light EP. Where previously it was just the two in a homemade studio, there was now a fully rehearsed band in a professional studio. Instead of the vast space of the Saskatchewan prairie, they were closer to their Ontario homes. With an honest and haunting voice, Megan creates a “sound that is both captivating and narcotic.” (Metro) While maintaining her love of folk music and simple structures, Megan and the band experimented with new sounds and ideas. Combined with Mark’s sonic concept, a unique and groundbreaking, creative album was born. The session players include labelmate Steve Puchalski (Deromantic) on keys; Adam White on bass; Bostonian Andrew Sadoway on drums; and Craig Browne (Memory Bank, Young Contrarians) on lead guitar and back-up vocals. Megan played acoustic and electric guitars, some keys and layers of vocals.
Megan has toured through the east coast of Canada, Quebec and Ontario, and ventured south to play Alabama, Kentucky and a tour through Texas. She has shared the stage with My Morning Jacket, Rock Plaza Central, Nathan Wiley and Sunparlour Players, along with numerous others. The band will play CMW in March, and following the release, will tour through Ontario and Quebec in April/May before playing NXNE in June. Future festival dates and Summer touring plans will be revealed shortly.
